"Do You Have Any Questions?"
You're feeling great, decked out in your best interview suit, you've answered all the
standard questions with ease, there's a great rapport building and it feels like
everything's been covered in detail. Then it happens - the interviewer asks if you
have any questions. Unfortunately, the only response you can think of is
"How's the weather? Did the Celtics lose again last night? Does this place have a
cafeteria?"
Well, if you've ever found yourself in that predicament before, here are a few
questions you can ask the interviewer:
|
•
|
What are three major personal strengths needed for succeeding at this job?
|
|
•
|
What are the three biggest challenges in this position?
|
|
•
|
What role do you see the person in this job playing, in terms of setting
and/or reaching departmental and company goals?
|
|
•
|
How do you plan to measure or evaluate my work and accomplishments and
ultimately determine if the hire proved to be a good match?
|
Being prepared with some solid, well-planned questions not only helps you "look smart"
and interested in the company, but also will help you in determining if that company
and position is the right match for you.
Keeping Cool In An Interview:
Since the first impression is a lasting one, here is how to make sure your first
impression is on target.
The first and most important key to remaining calm is to realize that even the most
confident people feel tense in a job interview. Most job interviewers are
understanding and will try to put you at ease. By focusing on what you are saying,
and saying it slowly, you will project a cool and calm demeanor. Also, many people
feel they're on display during an interview and have a tendency to fidget nervously.
To avoid this, plant your feet firmly on the floor and fold your hands or hold a copy
of your résumé.
Another key to "acing" an interview is to keep in mind it's also an opportunity for
you to evaluate the potential employer. Come prepared with questions about the
position and the company so you may determine if it is a good match. While you're
listening to the answers, you can collect your thoughts, calm your nerves and make an
educated decision about whether you're actually interested in that specific position.
Understanding and working with your nervousness will help ensure you leave a lasting
impression - not a last impression.
